The Verge Company, founded by Mark and Lani Verge, is a diverse portfolio of investments spanning the hospitality, real estate and business arenas.
The through-line of all investments is a deep-rooted understanding and respect of the neighborhoods and cultures they serve, while creating businesses that celebrate and nurture the careers and lives of its employees.
Mark and Lani Verge are its partners, with Mark Verge as the CEO and Lani as its CFO across all ventures.
The Verge Company founded West Side Rentals in 1996, the behemoth rentals search engine, and Southern California’s essential online nexus and mobile access to rental apartments in his early 20’s. They successfully transitioned the company from a predominantly retail storefront business to a hybrid clicks ‘n mortar model.
Their ability to hire strong leaders, anticipate the changing marketplace, adopt new technologies at the right time, and manage a large diverse workforce play an important role in Westside Rentals’ success.
The Verge Company’s portfolio is deep in real estate and hospitality. The hotel group includes the Ocean Park Hotel, Venice on the Beach, Hotel Hollywood (and most recently) the historic American Hotel in the booming Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles.
The Verge Company partner with Cedd Moses in owning “213,” a nightlife development and management company and driving force in LA’s urban revival.
Their popular downtown Los Angeles watering holes—Cole’s, Casey’s, Las Perlas, Cana, Seven Grand, and The Varnish, et al, built in the bones of Historic Downtown’s classic architecture, are a magnet for over 1,500,000 young, discerning drinkers annually seeking to satisfy their evolving taste for high quality spirits and handcrafted cocktails.
In early November 2016, “On the Verge Hospitality,” (The Verge Company’s Santa Monica restaurant group) opened Margo’s, a hyper-seasonal kitchen and bar on the eastern edge of Montana Avenue. Margo’s serves Modern California cuisine crafted by Executive Chef Greg A. Daniels, former Executive Chef at Salt Air on Abbott Kinney in Venice and Sous Chef at Perry Street in NYC, Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s celebrated west village ode to clean cuisine.
Beverage Director and Lead Barman Jordan Delp constructed Margo’s bar program, featuring classic cocktails and house originals crafted from a prized collection of top shelf small batch spirits, craft beer taps, and small production wines.
The Verge Company’s New American restaurant and wine bar, Art’s Table (on Montana Avenue and 10th) debuted in 2014. Art’s rustic-meets-modern menus and guests-first philosophy draw neighborhood crowds and appreciative palates in one of the Los Angeles’ most food-and-fitness conscious coastal communities.
Ashland Hill, their buzzing craft beer & wine garden on Main Street in Santa Monica’s historic Ocean Park neighborhood, launched in 2015 with partner Luke Tabit, featuring delectable seasonal dishes and gourmet bar bites.
It introduced a Gin & Tonic bar program, crafted by Master Barman Vincenzo Marianella — and transforms fast casual ordering to table service.
The OP Café, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. It’s the beloved family diner and homage to the early heroes of the Santa Monica Lifeguard Service on Ocean Park Boulevard and 32nd—known for its classic American breakfast and lunch fare and friendly service.
The Shore Bar (on Channel Road in Pacific Palisades), a partnership with the h.wood.group, round out the Verge Company’s family hospitality holdings.
They continue to look for opportunities to establish new concepts and they are poised to expand their hospitality footprint in Santa Monica and borders beyond in concert with an ensemble of savvy restaurant and bar pros under the “On the Verge Hospitality” moniker.
In 2010, The Verge Company founded Perfect Business, a resource center and network of entrepreneurs, investors and business experts, to share knowledge and coalesce the business community in support of aspiring entrepreneurs and seasoned business owners who may be struggling in today’s uncertain economy.
Perfect Business provides start-up tools gratis, potential funding opportunity, and a vast video library of inspiring interviews and sage advice from a constellation of market leaders. His mission includes committing time for speaking engagements evangelizing entrepreneurialism to inspire and encourage the next generation of business leaders.
Giving back to the community is a pillar in Mark and Lani’s lives — and they are both very active in their local community.
In addition to being a first-time employer for hundreds of local students new to the workforce, Mark and Lani donate generously on a regular basis to Santa Monica High School, St. Monica’s High School, and the Santa Monica YMCA.
The Verges are also very active in the Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA, raising money for cancer research.
AS IN NO OTHER TIME, PEOPLE OF ALL AGES YEARN TO ‘GATHER.’ THE FEEL A SENSE OF HOME. OF COMMUNITY. TO BE WELCOMED. WE CREATE BUSINESSES AND CULTURES THAT EMBRACE THESE BELIEFS.
